By Brian Lang, Director Real Time Logistics, Dematic.

With such an abundance of industry technology currently being used across multiple business channels, it has become increasingly difficult to manage and keep track of all the mobile devices that exist within operations.

Battery failures, device issues, or a lack of devices can all lead to big operational disruptions. Security risks are also a large threat when you are unable to identify lost, stolen or security breached devices, making them incredibly prone to vulnerabilities.

One of our valued partners and industry leaders in enterprise mobility, Zebra, has unveiled Zebra VisibilityIQ; providing instant business intelligence about your zebra devices, when and how you need it, so you can get the best out of your assets, workers and daily tasks.

Why is device visibility crucial?

Dependence on mobile assets in business-critical environments will only continue to grow – with the number of connected devices worldwide forecast to reach 75 billion by 2025.

However, without the ability to see where your devices are and what they’re doing, you become unable to manage and track their performance, which means there is more time wasted on manually locating the devices or rolling out new devices, as well as reduced productivity when there are delays in detecting issues such as interrupted IT networks, device service needs or security threats.

Beyond knowing where your devices are, if they are charged, if they need repairs, and if they are having technical issues, it is also critical to understand how the devices are being used and if there are enough of them at each location in order for them to be best utilised.

Without clear and comprehensive data that is easy to access, it’s challenging to see and monitor how your many devices are performing or decide what steps you need to take to improve operations. Zebra’s VisibilityIQ works to enable a portfolio of tools to generate data-driven, actionable insights to maximise your technology investments and security.
By deploying VisibilityIQ into operations, your business can discover clarity in device data, and avoid service disruption and disorder. It also reduces overhead costs associated with repairs and an excessive inventory.

Moving beyond a MDM solution

Having a mobile device management (MDM) solution alone isn’t enough in a world where mobility is now so incredibly vast. For example, VisibilityIQ can go beyond the benefits of a standard MDM, to show the repair status of your devices and identify any issues before they occur, which reduces the number of faults and helps a business to save both time and money.

A MDM often has you hunting for information that it can’t provide. The VisibilityIQ solution has everything in one place, such as contracts, support cases, repair statuses, and Zebra internet of things (IoT) agent data, which is all displayed in simple and easy to read traffic light colours.

A MDM’s data is often complicated to understand, and it doesn’t collect historical data, so you are unable to see trends to predict and prevent any problems. VisibilityIQ is simple and easy to use, giving you a clear relay of action-ready insights. It also democratises your data and customises the view based on a person’s role – as opposed to a MDM which is only accessed by IT.

VisibilityIQ benefits and business outcomes

The VisibilityIQ solution has a vast range of operational and business benefits, built to increase workplace efficiency and streamline productivity with real-time, actional insights. The solution allows you to leverage one easy to manage pane of glass, giving visibility to all device information.

Zebra VisibilityIQ is available in three unique solutions:

VisibilityIQ Foresight

Provides live insight into how your device is performing, highlighting any technical issues before they begin to impact operations and tracking productivity. It also helps to ensure your devices are ready and available for the workday, to forgo any guesswork for data-driven decisions.

VisibilityIQ DNA

VisibilityIQ DNA is an advanced system that includes key mobility tools, with consoles that customers can use to improve efficiencies, also improving the performance of Wi-Fi networks and overall coverage. It works to rapidly configure fleets of devices and identify good batteries from bad ones, to ensure your devices are always running smoothly.

VisibilityIQ OneCare

Provides information around repairs, contract information, support cases, and the status of your lifeguard security patches. The OneCare system is designed to maximise device uptime by getting technical support and repair service reports online, as well as security information – safeguarding your device data and identifying which devices may be vulnerable.

“There are a huge range of device issues that can occur out of the blue, which is why VisibilityIQ is such an important tool to have for industries that rely heavily on technology,” says Daniel Park, Technology Evangelist at Zebra Technologies.

“Device downtime, battery failures, unknown security risks, unplanned expenses, as well as stolen or lost devices exist as some of the many things that could very quickly impact operations. This makes the management of mobile devices, especially when there are a lot of them, awfully hard to keep on top of. VisibilityIQ delivers data-driven insights, which provide real-time visibility of your devices and how they are running, as well as your staff members and any daily priorities, in way that’s straightforward and easy to use for everyone,” added Daniel.

By Zebra Technologies

By 2025, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices worldwide is expected to reach 75 billion. With hundreds of thousands of mobile employees relying on these devices out on the front lines – there’s a real premium on knowing how well every device is performing. Yet, many organisations are paying the price of ‘not knowing’ such information.

Businesses today cannot afford to lose time or money on guessing where their devices are or if they’re being fully utilised. Reliance on guesswork impacts employee productivity, which in turn impacts operational efficiency and ultimately the bottom line.

Mobility and productivity are synonymous these days: if a device goes down, so does a worker.

The potential ripple effect of the smallest disruption in today’s supply chains is quite significant. In the few minutes it may take for a warehouse worker to grab a replacement mobile device from a charging station, fulfilment of dozens of orders may be stalled, leading to delayed shipments and missed delivery deadlines – something that could be equally detrimental to small-and-medium-sized businesses (SMB) and global corporations alike.

That’s precisely why proactive mobile device management should be a priority for every organisation, no matter the size or industry.

So how do you take control? Actionable insights

A suite of tools including sensors, RFID and data analytics can be used to give businesses actionable insights about each of its device’s location and status in real time. Referred to collectively as ‘Operational Visibility and Control’ services, these solutions are becoming increasingly accessible and affordable, and are the key to ensuring that businesses get the most out of their devices and workers.

Operational Visibility and Control services, such as Zebra’s VisibilityIQ Foresight solution, are extremely intelligent. They are much more expansive in their device monitoring than manual maintenance processes, which can something miss issues simmering below the surface, faults that develop in between inspections or future factors that humans simply cannot detect.

VisibilityIQ Foresight intelligently combines data from multiple touch points in real time, and translates the data into an easy-to-grasp, colour-coded dashboard that clearly indicates needed actions and alerts for your entire mobile device fleet.

For example, VisibilityIQ can instantly identify any threats to worker productivity, such as low battery or software updates. Over time, Operational Visibility and Control services get ‘smarter’ and more tailored to your business, by using algorithms that ‘learn’ from previous events that may impact the performance of workers devices, such as seasonal spikes in usage.

These services can collectively predict increased usage demands for example, that could strain devices or lead to potential system failures, allowing businesses to take remedial action before downtime happens.

The takeaway

Visibility solutions can improve worker productivity and, therefore, customer satisfaction; and reduce environmental, health and safety and data security risks – all of which increase the return on investment (ROI) for any organisation.

Having foresight – and the ability to act now to avoid a future device failure – will ensure that a mobility solution does what it’s supposed to do: keeping employees operating at peak efficiency levels.

By: Brian Lang, Director Real Time Logistics, Dematic.

As customer expectations around delivery continue to rise, order fulfilment becomes increasingly demanding, and distribution centres (DCs) are under more pressure than ever before to fulfil orders quicker. It is crucial that DCs invest in technology that will improve efficiency and productivity in the warehouse in order to keep up with the increasing demands the supply chain industry is currently facing.

For more than 20 years, Honeywell has helped DCs across the globe to achieve significant productivity and accuracy gains by empowering their workers with Vocollect voice solutions. Honeywell has now introduced two new voice solutions compatible with the current most popular mobile operating system, Android, to the Australian and New Zealand market.

Talk to us today and find out how Voice and Android could benefit your business.

New Guided Work Solutions software bring Android to Vocollect voice solutions

Honeywell’s newly introduced Guided Work Solutions software paired with Vocollect A700x Series of mobile devices will help Australian and New Zealand supply chain businesses improve efficiency through hands-free, eyes-up solutions.

Designed for small-to-medium-sized warehouses, Honeywell’s Guided Work Solutions is a software application that runs on the Android operating system (OS) and is based on the company’s industry-leading Vocollect voice technology.

Honeywell’s Guided Work Solutions software is bringing Vocollect Voice to Android devices, and with Microsoft ceasing its support on the Window OS, Google Android has emerged as the leading OS, so this compatibility is crucial.

Honeywell has identified a number of security challenges that Android devices presented and has developed solutions that remove the potential risks to supply chain businesses looking to migrate to Android. Honeywell has also provided these businesses with the ability to remotely manage devices running the Android OS, with managers able to remotely upgrade software, lock or kill stolen or lost devices, and all via a simple console. The console can also be used to manage not only hand-held devices but also scanners and even consumer smartphones as well.

The Guided Work Solutions software runs on a wide range of compatible hardware, including Vocollect Voice, Honeywell’s mobile computers, as well as other Android mobile devices. The Android platform provides support for multiple interfaces including voice, scanning and keypad. Android devices are enhancing the user experience and offering differentiated software applications, and Honeywell’s voice solutions will provide further benefits to the warehouse.

Easily configured and quickly deployed on Vocollect Voice, the Guided Work Solutions guides workers through a variety of warehouse tasks, from picking to receiving, replenishment and put-away. Businesses can achieve numerous benefits, with results showing up to 35% productivity gains, 50% error reductions and 20% fewer safety incidents – all while cutting training time in half.

Voice technology in the warehouse

Voice solutions provide numerous benefits in the warehouse including productivity, accuracy, scalability and management visibility.

Honeywell’s popular Vocollect A700x Series empowers mobile workers in DCs to operate hands-free with voice technology. The technology benefits both the worker – with intuitive and ergonomic wearable technology, and the DC operation – with outstanding productivity and business value.

The Vocollect A700x Series includes A730x, A720x and A710x, and each device is able to support simultaneous use of Bluetooth-enabled headsets, scanners, and printers. They all also support vehicle-mounted configurations, which significantly reduces device handling, damage, start-up time, and battery purchase needs. The A700x Series devices also fully support existing software implementations, which makes updating to this new platform extremely easy and cost-effective.

Honeywell Vocollect voice solutions provide proven and innovative workflow performance technologies custom designed for DC, maintenance and inspection, and retail environments. They are used by nearly 1 million mobile workers in DCs around the world. Vocollect technology streamlines mobile workforces by providing best-in-class, voice-enabled workflow processes in 60 countries and 39 languages worldwide.

Voice technology can also scale to suit changing business requirements while empowering management with greater control, flexibility and visibility over warehouse operations.

Voice technology paired with Honeywell’s Guided Work Solutions will help businesses achieve significant efficiency and productivity gains within the warehouse, and as technology continues to play an increasingly important role in DCs, adopting new solutions will be non-negotiable for those wanting to stay competitive.

By: Raghav Sibal, Manhattan Associates’ Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand

No matter what your industry, businesses are facing a more competitive marketplace than ever. There are cost pressures, time pressures and customer expectation pressures. Change happens more often and more quickly. The most successful companies are the ones that can adapt and improve the fastest. But how is that accomplished?

The secrets to becoming a better business are hidden in your data. That’s where you can scan supply chain operations to find cost savings, competitive advantages and undiscovered relationships that can lead to new promotions, smarter decisions and increased sales. Your data has answers – you just need a better way to analyse it.

Currently, the methods used to handle data aren’t good enough. A new approach to analytics is needed. One that truly opens data up, unlocks opportunities and unleashes potential.

The status quo comes up short

Traditionally, companies have used systems that are good at managing transactions. But they keep data compartmentalised with rigid boundaries. There’s no way to search across information. No way to make comparisons. No way to make new discoveries. In essence, the data is trapped in an inflexible system that also happens to carry a high total cost of ownership. Not an ideal situation at all.

Many analytics solutions are limited

To solve the issue of siloed data, a range of analytics solutions have been developed. Often, this technology is focused on specific data comparisons that are decided in advance and involves transformation of the data from its original state to be examined. Users gain value from dashboards and reports as long as the predefined data feeds lie within the scope of the overall business challenges they face.

That’s better than no analytics at all, but this approach is still limited. It’s tactical rather than strategic; predefined instead of open-ended. It doesn’t allow much user control, enable wider analysis or promote the discovery of unexpected connections. In other words, the gateway to data is opened, but just barely.

It’s time for a new approach

The right analytics solution is designed to be completely open. Rather than collecting information, or predetermining what factors are mined, it gives access to oceans of data. Long-term history, enterprise data and a range of external factors – weather, social interaction, location and more – can all be explored and converted into actionable insight. Companies are already getting value from this type of advanced operational analytics.

For example, Campbells Soup found there was an increase in consumption of their products based on customer region, temperature and temperature change. So, on days when it was cold or the mercury dropped sharply, they changed their internet advertising strategy and increased soup sales. Proctor & Gamble discovered that most U.S. women check the weather each morning. On high-humidity days, they boosted advertising of hair frizz control products and higher sales followed. Credit card companies are using data to cross-reference the location of purchases with the location of a cardholder’s cell phone so they can detect fraud before purchase approvals. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg.

When you’re able to leverage the power of your data, the possibilities are endless. Better yet, with the right solution, analysis can be accomplished with minimal IT involvement. Users are empowered to quickly, freely and independently mine the data for the next competitive advantage.

What can your data do for you?

In an era of fierce competition, data is a valuable, untapped resource. With an advanced analytics solution, you can proactively and creatively find connections across your supply chain that help you increase revenue, cut costs and boost efficiency.

The secrets are in your data, just waiting to be discovered.

It’s well known that Australia can prove an expensive base for many manufacturers and retailers who are impacted by high wages, energy costs and expensive property pricing when compared to other regions around the world. This puts pressure on the entire business, including the supply chain, to find solutions that ensure their operations are as efficient as possible.

Michael Dyson, Managing Director at SOTI, looks at the impact of Australia’s high operating costs on a business’ supply chain and how they might overcome this challenge through warehouse automation and increased use of mobile devices.

The pressure of higher costs

Australia currently has the highest minimum wage in the world, at $18.93 per hour, which compared to countries such as the US, whose average minimum wage is $10.24 (AUD), is quite high. While this may be good news for workers, it puts pressure on local businesses, particularly manufacturing and retail, who are struggling to remain competitive in an increasingly global market.

If a business is not able to keep up with the high operating costs in Australia, the result could be that they move their manufacturing overseas. This has been the case with the car manufacturing industry lately, with companies like Toyota and Holden closing their manufacturing doors in recent years.

As well as high minimum wage, Australian businesses also need to deal with real estate prices and running costs, which can be prohibitively expensive, especially in the major cities. These factors can limit a company’s expansion plans and force businesses to setup and operate DC’s in less desirable locations, further away from main transportation hubs like shipping ports and airports, all of which adds to key transportation costs.

These issues can leave supply chain businesses looking for solutions to increase their competitiveness and reduce the high operating costs they face.

Automation in the warehouse

The supply chain, and particularly the warehouse, is one area of a business where costs can be reduced through increased automation.

Automation provides many benefits around the reduction of labour costs, including being able to operate for 24 hours, seven days a week without breaks. This means businesses can reduce expensive overtime shifts. Automated machines can continue working through weekends and public holidays, so businesses also do not have to slow down their operations during the common downtime periods.

Automation can also help address the challenge of real estate, as it allows warehouses to operate more smartly by optimising use of the facility they operate, to ensure that no space is wasted. High density warehouses may help overcome limitations of real estate.

There are also additional gains to be made in a reduction in electricity costs with no need for lights and heating in an automated warehouse. And as lighting can typically account for 30 per cent of a warehouse’s energy bill, the savings could be quite substantial.

Many supply chains have already embraced automation to differing degrees, but the continuing rise in operating costs is sure to make automation a bigger part of supply chains.

Dark warehouses – or fully automated warehouses – are beginning to spring up in Australia, with a number of them having been developed in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne recently. They are already a well-established concept in other countries such as the US, the UK and China, but at the moment are still rather uncommon in Australia. That is set to rapidly change, however, as retailers and consumer goods companies seek extra economic advantage.

Mobility and device management

One area of automation that is currently well-used within Australian supply chains to increase the productivity and efficiency of available workers, is mobile devices. IT systems and solutions, including the increasing use of wireless networks to support mobile access and a wide array of mobile devices, are increasingly integral to supply chains, to support the management of workflow and assure optimal productivity.

IoT integrates these enterprise mobile devices with the supply chain’s back-end system to automatically track and gain insights from a wealth of available information without the need for any direct human action. This automatically provides the business, and sometimes also the customer, with key information such as package tracking and logistics monitoring to ensure the right item is available in the right location at precisely the right time. This level of mobility brings information to where it’s needed efficiently and reliably, which is vital to supply chains that can’t afford any interruptions or downtime to operations.

To ensure an efficient mobility solution, businesses may be faced with the need for an integrated platform approach to manage all endpoints seamlessly – from purpose built devices for inventory management to apps to automate paper based processes, to business intelligence and real time analytics all crucial to business critical operations within the supply chain.

Effective mobility solutions also offer remote support to solve problems quickly, to further minimise downtime and secure critical business information.

A wide variety of cost reductions can be achieved from enterprise mobility, due to the optimisation of both worker productivity and efficiency, as well as the increasing integration IT-centric automation that arms a business with the information it needs to improve and succeed.

The SOTI ONE Platform delivers on these requirements and can help supply chains reduce the cost of business-critical mobility, as well as minimise any downtime.

IoT vital to success

There is no doubt that automation is set to continue increasing in importance for the supply chain in Australia, as further pressure comes from high operating costs, as well as a very competitive global market. However, it is crucial that automated warehouses are managed and connected to IoT to ensure smooth, uninterrupted operations, because if this isn’t assured, there will be no competitive gain for these businesses.
